Better late than never?

Welcome to my blog! I've decided to dive in, learn something new and join many of my on-line friends. From time to time I'll be chatting about my dolls and my other fabric art, sharing some of my artistic processes, hoping to present bits of loveliness that I see around me, and getting to know others who inhabit this wonderful world of creativity.

Here's a picture of something new in my art life--fabric fraktur. So far as I know, I believe it's an original adaptation (is that an oxymoron?) of the traditional PA German art. I take fraktur designs, paint them with custom-mixed fabric dyes on specially treated fabric so they look like the old watercolors. Then I outline them with waterproof ink and make a "sandwich" with wool batting, and cotton backing and quilt them with perle cotton.

Fraktur were usually family records or presentation gifts--some of the most common motifs are flowers, birds, and angels. They were drawn on paper with ink and painted with a limited palette of watercolors; these framed mini-quilts are my homage to a colorful form of folkart.
